Daniel Roseberry’s notes for Schiaparelli’s Spring/Summer 2026 couture collection, The Agony and the Ecstasy, connect the collection to the emotional impact of a visit to the Sistine Chapel. The house describes animal-inspired silhouettes, dimensional lace and vivid colours drawn from birds of paradise.

Why ask whether it is wearable?

Wearability is a reasonable question when buying a coat. It is not the only useful question when looking at couture. A collection can investigate proportion, provoke a feeling or show the possibilities of a technique. Its relevance need not depend on whether the most dramatic look would fit your commute.

Our reading is that spectacle becomes most compelling when it has internal discipline. An exaggerated shape still needs a relationship to the body. A bright colour still exists next to another colour. Even fantasy has a composition.

Three ways to look

  1. At a distance: identify the silhouette before you study the embellishment.
  2. Close up: see which details create actual depth and which suggest depth through light or pattern.
  3. In motion: use the official show film to see what changes when the garment moves.

A still photograph can freeze a spectacular shape into an object. The moving image brings back the wearer and makes weight, rhythm and balance easier to consider. Neither view tells the whole story alone.

A small dose of theatre

If you want to take something into everyday dressing, borrow the idea of one unexpected interruption. A sculptural cuff against a plain sleeve, an unusually shaped collar or a vivid scarf can create a focal point. Keep the rest of the outfit simple enough for the detail to be seen.
