High fashion is a broad editorial expression. Haute couture has a more specific institutional history. The Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode records the legally registered designation established in 1945 and describes the role of specialist house workshops in its development.

Price is not a definition

An expensive garment is not automatically haute couture. A dramatic runway silhouette is not proof of couture status either. When covering a named collection, use the category supplied by the house and the official fashion calendar rather than inferring it from appearance.

This matters because the label changes what kind of conversation you are having. An outfit made to express an atelier’s possibilities invites different questions from a ready-to-wear collection presented to buyers and clients.

Look beyond the spectacular finish

Decoration is only one part of a garment. Shape, internal support, the handling of fabric and the relationship to the wearer also matter. A restrained piece can invite close attention just as much as one covered in embellishment.

In photographs, separate what is visible from what is documented. You may see an unusually clean curve or a complex surface. The number of hours, the people involved and the exact technique require a reliable source. A compelling fashion story does not need invented labour statistics.

Use three levels of description

  • Observation: what you can see in the image or film.
  • Documented process: what the house or atelier identifies.
  • Interpretation: what the result makes you think or feel.

Keeping those levels distinct makes room for both precision and enthusiasm. You can be moved by a garment without pretending to know everything about its construction.

Where to go next

Read our Dior and Schiaparelli collection lenses, then follow their official gallery links. Compare the different ways each collection uses volume, surface and references to nature. The comparison is more revealing than asking which one looks more expensive.
