From a distance, two floral jackets might seem to use the same kind of material. Up close, one design may be woven into the fabric while another is printed on it. That difference can affect texture and appearance, but it does not create a simple ranking of quality.

A pattern and a production method

Jacquard weaving allows complex designs to be created through the arrangement of interlacing threads. A print applies a design to a textile surface. The term jacquard is also used for patterned knits, so it is worth checking whether a product description refers to a woven or knitted fabric.

Mood’s jacquard catalogue separates woven fashion fabrics from knit options. That distinction is useful because a shared motif or trade name does not imply the same structure, stretch or intended use.

What can the reverse tell you?

If you can inspect an unattached swatch, compare both sides. You may see thread floats, a changed colour relationship or a design that belongs visibly to the weave. A printed design may appear differently on the reverse. None of these clues is a universal test: finishing, double-faced construction and printing methods can complicate the picture.

Do not unpick a garment to investigate. A maker’s specification or fabric supplier’s record is better evidence than damaging an item to reveal its reverse.

Separate three observations

  1. Image: what motif or repeat do you see?
  2. Surface: is it smooth, raised, lustrous, matte or a mixture?
  3. Structure: what evidence establishes how it was made?

You can answer the first two from a good photograph more readily than the third. Writing “raised floral surface” is more accurate than confidently calling an unidentified fabric brocade.

Use the distinction when styling

A patterned surface with visible relief can provide enough contrast beside a smooth plain garment, even if both colours are subdued. A flat graphic print may instead create its strongest effect through the motif’s scale and contrast.

Compare the materials in ordinary daylight and from a few steps away. The effect you enjoy on a close-up fabric photograph may disappear at outfit scale. That is not a defect; it tells you whether the detail is intended to reward a close look or make an immediate statement.

Our two-pattern guide takes the next step: arranging patterned surfaces together without requiring every element to match.
