A trouser hem does not exist in isolation. It meets a shoe, moves around an ankle and responds to the width and weight of the leg above it. That is why the same trousers can appear clean with one pair of shoes and gathered with another.
What is the break?
In common tailoring language, the break is the fold or interruption formed when the trouser hem meets the shoe. Terms such as no break, slight break and fuller break describe a spectrum, not a universal set of measurements. The visual result depends on the trouser and footwear together.
Start with the intended line
If you want an uninterrupted vertical effect, compare a shorter resting length with a longer one that creates more folds. If you enjoy a relaxed accumulation of fabric, check that the fullness is deliberate and practical rather than a hem being trapped under your foot.
A narrow trouser opening and a wide opening do not behave identically over the same shoe. Do not transfer a measurement from one pair to another without checking the full shape.
Bring the actual shoes
For a fitting, wear the shoes—or a closely comparable pair—you expect to use most. A different upper, sole or heel can change where the fabric comes to rest. If you need the trousers to work with several pairs, show the fitter the range and discuss the compromise.
Look while moving
- Walk normally and check that the hem clears the ground.
- Sit and stand to see whether the fabric settles again.
- Look at both legs; posture and stance can affect what you see.
- Check the back view as well as the fold at the front.
A polished photograph cannot substitute for these ordinary movements. Clothing that requires constant attention may be a poor match for your intended day even if the still image looks exactly right.
Keep style separate from fault
A visible ankle is not automatically a mistake, and a fuller break is not automatically dated. Describe the effect you want, then make sure it is comfortable and functional. The most useful alteration brief is specific about the shoes, the movement and the desired line.
